The visa is issued for four months, after which you may be granted a residence permit for two years, or for one year without a residence permit in Portugal.
Documents must be apostilled, translated into Portuguese or English, and notarised.
Step 1. Appointment for document submission to the Consulate
Once all the necessary documents have been gathered, you can book an appointment via the E-Visa portal or by email in countries where a separate application is required.
To apply on the website, you must accurately complete the application form with personal details and upload your documents. This visa category allows you to apply together with your spouse and/or children. For such applications, the minimum monthly income requirement increases. To apply for family visas, each family member, including minors, must complete a separate application form and collect their own set of documents.
Step 2. Visit to the Consulate
On the appointed date, you must submit the originals of all documents and their certified translations to the Portuguese consulate or VFS. The processing time for visa documents is up to 60 days. Consulates have the right to request any documents beyond those previously listed. If the set of documents is incomplete, your application may not be accepted. After review, your visa will either be approved or refused. In case of refusal, you have 15 days to appeal if the refusal is unfounded.
Step 3. Registration at AIMA
After receiving the visa (valid for 120 days), you need to book an appointment at AIMA to submit biometric data and additional documents, after which a residence card will be issued.
For the appointment, you must provide a new certificate of no criminal record, a rental agreement in Portugal for at least 12 months, a notarised statement from the landlord confirming the rental, and your latest bank statements for the last three months. Occasionally, additional documents may be requested.
Step 4. Obtaining the Residence Card (Titulo de residência)
Within 15-90 days after visiting AIMA, you will receive an envelope with your residence permit card, which will be valid for two years. You can also collect the card in person at the AIMA office. To do so, you must pay an additional €25 when submitting your documents.
